Glasgow’s athletics team is undoubtedly one of the strongest club contenders in this year’s Taxi’s Cup.

With an impressive record of championships behind them, including having won the Scottish Universities Indoors for five years running, the Outdoors for three, and having lifted the Appleton Trophy also for the last five, the team is setting their sights high this year, and aiming to come out top in every race. Going for a fourth consecutive win will however be no easy feat, and that’s why the team has held trials for the first time this year.

There is a great mix of freshers and more experienced athletes within the team this year, including the Mens’ Captain Sam Davies, who will be competing both in the 800m and as part of the mens’ 4x400m relay team – with recent successes in winning the Indoor 800m and reaching the semi-final for the 1500 at the BUCS.

Multi-eventer Andrew Murphy is another to watch – having achieved several personal bests over the last couple of seasons he will surely be a strong addition to the 4x200m relay team, as well as competing individually in the 60m.

Adding to the long list of talented sprinters in the team are Lindsey Young (for both the 4x200m and 4x400m relays) and Danny Lafferty, who is hoping that his contributions to the same events will help lead Glasgow to yet another victory.

Finally, fresh face on the team Edidiong Akpan is pegged as one of the rising stars since joining in September, and is hoping for a PB in the 60m after going from strength to strength in recent competitions.

With such a strong Glasgow team facing up to the competitors on Wednesday 18th, it’s sure to be an action-packed night at the Emirates, and we’re sure that our rival teams won’t go down without a fight.
