GUU Management in naked HRC intrusion

Jo Shaw

The Hetherington Research Club (HRC) occupation has claimed a ‘drunken rampage of vandalism and intimidation’ by members of the Glasgow University Union (GUU) Board of Management, culminating in destruction of property and the activation of the building’s fire alarm, following a recent intrusion into the building.

At approximately 03.30am, Monday 7, a group of eight members of the GUU gained access to the HRC building by reportedly pretending to be members of the Green Party travelling to Glasgow for a conference. Three of the men, said to be intoxicated at the time, were naked, using ‘Vote James Foley’ and ‘Vote Oliver Milne’ placards which were left over from the recent SRC elections to retain their modesty. One also sported a bright orange feathered mask in order to obscure his identity, eyewitnesses claim.

The reported damage to the Free Hetherington included destroyed signs taken from the front of the building, deliberately blocked toilets and a missing fire extinguisher, whilst two fire engines were dispatched to the Free Hetherington in response to the activated fire alarm. Strathclyde Police were also called to the scene.

It is believed that both present and former members of the GUU Board of Management were involved in the incident.

Chris Sibbald, incoming GUU President following the institution’s recent elections, visited the occupation following the incident in attempt to reconcile relations between the two organisations. The GUU subsequently issued a formal apology condemning the damage done.

It said: “Last night, various members of Glasgow University Union took it upon themselves to streak up University Avenue and enter the occupied Hetherington Research Building. Those members of the Board of Management not implicated in the event condemn the incident fully and would like to issue a formal and public apology to all those who were offended.

“This is an action that does not represent Glasgow University Union; it was an action committed by individuals. However, those individuals are aware that they hold a position of representation and responsibility at Glasgow University Union and they must, therefore, openly apologise.”

He went on to explain that those involved will face a disciplinary hearing.

He said: “Furthermore, and more seriously, a fire alarm was set-off in the middle of the night. This is completely unacceptable and the members responsible will be taken to a full discipline hearing.

“We have asked those who represent the occupation at the Hetherington Research Club to supply Glasgow University Union with as much information as possible with regards to the cause of the fire alarm, so that we can make as strong a case as possible.

“Glasgow University Union assures its members that it is taking this matter very seriously.”

On the same evening, a banner baring the words ‘Welcome to the Free Hetherington’, which was stolen from the front of the occupied building last week, was also displayed from the top of the GUU. Attempts to retrieve it were alleged to have been met by members of the current GUU Board of Management, who, it is claimed, threw drinks at occupiers on the steps below.

Speaking to Subcity Radio, Chris Sibbald denied that any drinks had been thrown, instead asserting that a glass had fallen from the balcony accidentally.

The GUU has been involved in a string of recent controversies centring on the destruction of ‘Vote James Foley’ placards on University Avenue, as well as allegations by Foley supporters that the GUU abused their position as a polling station during the SRC elections by supporting Stuart Ritchie as a candidate, although this was strenuously denied by GUU management.

SRC Vice President for Student Support, Fraser Sutherland, criticised those involved in the latest controversy.

He said: “We are disappointed that once again the actions of a few individuals acting in an irresponsible way has undermined what should be the main focus of students at the university – that being the threat to learning and support for students through cuts levied by the university SMG.

“Setting off a fire alarm in any premises is at least juvenile and at worst highly dangerous.  It is disappointing to see people who are elsewhere in positions of responsibility act in a stupid and inappropriate way to those to those taking part in the HRC occupation.”

An eyewitness who was in the Hetherington at the time of the attack listed the accusations levied at participating GUU members.

They said: “Theft, vandalism, waste of police and fire service time, stress, sleep loss, intimidation, indecency, verbal abuse, lives potentially put at risk; I won’t call it a climate of fear, but personally I have hopes for better weather.”

    David Cameron's Barmy Army!

  • calm down shaw

If I am not mistaken Jo Shaw is a member of the Free Hetherington and this article is not only sensational but far from impartial.

And I mean sensational in every sense of the word. Political LADS.

  • Chris Russell

Fair Play lads…. you Glasgow uni types get a bad rep and are forever being called fannies….. this sort of display really shows the world that you boys have balls!

Although the fire alarm was slightly over the edge… but f*ck it, in for a penny in for a pound I say!

  • i hate the guu

@calmdownshaw, she reported what happned so shut it.

  • kate

The GUU are an embarassment to Glasgow University, they make me sick. Their actions are disgusting, it's exactly this kind of behavior that alienates students and stops people going to the GU, no wonder they're accounts are in the red.

  • seriously?

are you all aware that the guu is basically a pub yes? and not some sort of politically charged den of organised crime. lighten up. go get yourselves a cheap pint

  • Reality Check

Actually the GUU has been producing healthy margins for a number of years now and is "in the black".

  • Paul Pot-Kettle-Blac

The fire alarm's a bit much, but – you have a bunch of people who've broken into two buildings, giving it all their 'anything goes, who are we to obey your rules, property is theft' mantra…. Then another bunch of folk come along (non-violently) to what is supposedly now a space for everyone, and they do their own stuff which some of the first group 0bject to. On what grounds? Censoring other people's conduct? Get over yourselves, lads and lasses. You'll have to be a bit less precious before the revolution's finished.

  • notnaked

Why do you reffer to them as GUU management instead of jsut writing an article with a title – students in naked HRC instrusion

obviuosly an aim is to vilify GUU and encourange students to hate them

and the fact that comments are moderating here and not comming immedeatley only creates stronger image that newspaper is trying to forme one opinion

    so please approve these comment

  • attemptatreason

as much as i really do appreciate good fun, i think what guu members/supporters aren't grasping is that this constant inconsiderate attitude towards anyone outside of their ingroup really grates on people. whether you like it or not, other members of the university feel misportrayed by you. its also not simply a case of having to 'lighten up' when you take your 'fun' outside of your ingroup and start affecting others. even if you must have your nobody-likes-us-but-we-don't-care outlook, what is this need to shove that view in other people's faces? for a group that apparently doesn't need approval from outside, you're doing a good job of getting attention.

  • Derek Marnes

"instead asserting that a glass had fallen from the balcony accidentally"

    Oh right…

  • Whit

Paul, you do realize that being drunk and naked and entering a place where people are sleeping then pulling a fire alarm (causing the waste of emergency services' time) isn't some normal, neutral activity. It was clearly malicious and claiming that we're 'censoring' people who behave in an totally inappropriate way is lunacy.

  • Paul Posh Kettled Bl

People objected because the LADS were abusive, indecently exposed themselves and set off the fire alarm. All of which was stated above, but your dailymail o'matic was already on the go.

  • Paul

I reckon you are fucking mental you miserable cunts.

  • admin

@notnaked: Comments need to be approved before they're put up because the website gets flooded with comments like "great article i really like the datas check out my website to find sexy girl in your area", etc. Don't worry, we're not censoring anything.

Also, the GUU's statement has been in the article from the start. Cheers.

  • Fabritzio Smooth.

Jo Shaw is a massive hypocrite. She and her fellow "socialists" are illegally occupying a university building. Key word – "ILLEGAL". Has Miss Shaw ever worked a day in her life to afford the simple luxuries that she is apparently protesting for? Or is she still living out of daddy's pocket, as Mr Shaw continues to pay her rent in the west end of Glasgow, and supply her with enough cash to enjoy her university life? Think before you write, Miss Shaw. Stereotyping the G.U.U. and attempting to publicly slander them to the student community, just because you are in a huff is juvenile.

Dry your eyes, plug up and maybe get a part time job.

Let's face it, the cuts are happening and the Hetherington is a lost cause. If I'm right, one of the reasons it shut down was because its books were "in the red" and not worth saving. I think it's time to leave, before the university forces you out on your socialist arses.

In future, maybe avoid inviting some inebriated boys in for a cup of tea at 4 in the morning. ….Clever.

  • A female that actual

Fabrizio Smooth you handsome man! Well said sir. Free for a pint? xx

  • Kensington Smythe

It doesn't look like it was malicious. And let's all get off our high horses, just because one of these boys was identified as a GUU Board Member doesn't mean that it has anything to do with the GUU. The people involved were acting as individuals and students. Plus, malicious? Look at the smile in that photo, they were clearly taking the piss, not being aggressive.

Sure, the boys are arseholes, but there are 20,000 students at Glasgow. There's bound to be a couple. Just deal with it.

  • posho

    I say I say I say

What's wrong with pretending to be stranded in Glasgow after missing your bus to Aberdeen and then forcing a door open, disturbing POOROES and letting off fire extinguishers. Its not liek the Pooroes are going to get anything ayway.

They'll be begging on the streets for their fees next year.

    Tally Ho!

"Jo Shaw is a massive hypocrite."

    Here, here.

She takes the moral high-ground on what appears to have been japes gone a touch too far by the members of the GUU, yet there is clear photographic evidence of her physically assaulting Aaron Porter. Not to mention, false imprisonment and harassment in this childish 'kettling' incident.

If she wishes to make judgement on other's actions she should bloody well check her own are in line before spewing biased crap over the university paper.

  • Interesting Bias

Much of the criticism of this on the FH facebook page has been about the supposed background of the GUU members involved. As if that had anything to do with anything. But given that many of those involved at the FH seem so bothered by "class" background, what about the writer of this piece Jo Shaw who I believe attended this entirely egalitarian institution http://www.kilgraston.com/

Given that she and the other trespassers broke into the Hetherington I would be interested to hear the views on "justice for the rich" in relation to this one…

  • Kensington Smythe

    Jo Shaw,
    We know you,
    You're a f*****g Tory, too!

  • Anonymous

the whole argument that the HRC is 'free' with no management etc is bullshit. The fact is, that as there is no management or leadership, everyone who choses to involve themselves in that movement is jointly accountable for the others.

Try being elected to student government if you want to make an impact… ah, no, wait, you tried and were told to fuck off by the electorate!

  • David

Jo is one of the most comitted people in the struggle against cuts, however this is NOT a thread about how good/bad Jo is.

Hate on the Hetherington all you want but it just shows your arguments carry no weight when you all gang up to make personal attacks on the author of this article.

  • qm member

as a qm member i think the action of these 'guu' boys are being taken to seriously these LADS were perhaps being idiots but to slander the guu and its members is not acceptable. The qm and the guu cater to different people and there is a known friendly 'rivalry' between the two unions but i have never felt threatened by a member of the guu and if anything am amused by there light hearted ability to have fun. What the free heathrington group are doing is far worse than the display shown by the boys. In my opinion instead of being stubborn kids holding there ground against cuts (which are unfortunately going to have to be made) they should instead actively consult the university court and DISCUSS as a student where they feel the cuts could come from… this would be a much more productive use of time instead of sitting ILLEGALY in an unoccupied building. The year ahead is going to have to be a time where all student bodies come together and discuss where the students feel the university could decrease funding etc and hopefully reduce the amount of job losses and disruption to life at university!

  • guu member

Hear hear @qm member… some very valid points!

  • Reality Check

Since when did the Guardian become a mouth piece for the hard left on campus? The used to be they were bastards but they were bastards to everyone. This is just a propaganda piece for the Trespassers.

    Sad day for the Guardian.

  • Why can't we al

"The GUU are an embarassment to Glasgow University, they make me sick. Their actions are disgusting, it’s exactly this kind of behavior that alienates students and stops people going to the GU, no wonder they’re accounts are in the red."

Replace "GUU" and "GU" with "The Free Hetherington" and it would probably reflect the views of many students at Glasgow, especially following Portergate…

  • Jo Shaw-king

    @David

Jo's put her name to this article, therefore she is liable to scrutiny by the reader because of her apparent impartiality. Would you not scrutinize the author of a column titled "All is well in Libya" by Mr M. Gaddafi if it seemed somewhat biased.

As there is no discernible "leader" of the FH, each member has to be accountable for their actions. In Jo's case they include bullying and intimidation and, instead of finding the humorous side of a few silly boy's antics, her actions have now changed to attacking the GUU in an attempt to slander an institution where her type is not and never will be welcome. Maybe Jo wouldn't accept daddy cutting her funding for uni but this is reality and, in the real world, cuts HAVE to be made. Maybe her time would be better spent negotiating WHERE cuts can be made instead of moaning about GUU members.

    • Kate

      @ Jo Shaw-king

what exactly is Jo's "type", and and why are they not welcome at the GUU?

  • posho

I hate these damned commie-pooroes crying about a fire alarm being set off, the fire brigade called and a fire extinguisher being wasted.

    Whats wrong with that?

Its not like we're putting them in the stocks, flogging them or anything.

    Its just a light-hearted prank what-what?

Why do people have to be sensitive?

A good caning beats the sensitivity out of you soon enough, what-what?

Love to Kate and Wills xx

  • a. nonymous

im not associated with the QM, hetherington, guardian or the GUU but i feel the need to comment in response to "anonymous" above.

RE: student "elections". yes i feel like a twat putting elections in inverted commas but their parochial and pathetic nature deserves no less. i know plenty of people who have got involved- and thats fair enough and commendable in spirit but to suggest the winners of these popularity contests are an actual student 'government' is fantasy.

while i'm moaning: the ire on both sides of this debate (not just on the article but also by presumably the same 30 people discussing absolutely nothing in the most high handed terms on fb) is ridiculous. fucking fannys.

  • Anonymous First Year

I am a First year at the University of Glasgow.

Before coming to Glasgow I wasn't even aware that their were two unions (and the SRC and GUSA), let alone the fact that you could choose to join either one, it was all very exciting for me.

In Freshers' Week I met all of the T-shirted Helpers – every single GUU helper I met was friendly and approachable, I never felt intimidated or that they were anything but helpful and pleasant individuals. Thats not to say that the GM helpers weren't those things – but the context of this article has led me to offer my view on GUU 'types'; my opinion may be considered naive but I can tell you that every First year I know/have spoken to shares those views.

It looks to me like everyone commenting here and on the various FB threads has been at Uni for at least several years and have strong opinions that have been set in stone by some event or other in their past that has led to these deep-seated feelings. Regardless of what has happened in the past (I can probably say that because I dont actually know what happened in the past) I feel that surely every incident has to be dealt with on its own merits (or demerits in this case) – if we harboured resentment for those who have wronged us in the past my Scottish sister would not be going out with her English boyfriend and my ex-Navy Grandfather would not be going on Holiday to Germany this year.

It strikes me that alot of the people in these threads are Arts students (Politics much?) due to the vocabulary and rhetoric used, and the idealogical rationalisations being employed (wrong or right). As a Sciences student I like to make rational judgements buy looking at all relevant information and evidence – but only relevant evidence – perhaps such an approach should be used in this case?

If I have been incredibly naive and juvenile in this analysis please forgive me, much like you should forgive these guys for being naive and juvenile on Monday morning.

    x

    • Kirsten

      To Anonymous First Year

Politics isn't an arts subject. It's a social science. Your point seems to be that Science students are the only ones who can make rational decisions. Crap.

It's not the GM. It's the QM.

These GUU members were not just naive and juvenile, they were stupid to a massive degree. These guys are not first years, they are people who are going to be going out to try and get a job in the next few years. How does this look to a future employer? Their actions were also criminal. This is the point that needs to be made.

  • posho

    @ anonymous first year

    Hear Hear!

Science has proven that those of us with blue blood are genetically superior to these bottom feeders in the HRC.

I believe eugenics is the science of this.

    Hurrah for the Blackshirts!

  • Who died?

    Rich kids playing at socialism.

  • s

leave Jo the hell alone, she has reported it like it is.

The president of the GUU himself has confirmed that these events are true, so it's clearly not biased.

The Guu are a fucking embarassement to this university, and have repeatedly refused to fight against the cuts, they certainly don't represent me.

  • mandy

No, it was more than one GUU board member, in fact a load of them were, as admitted by Sibbald himself. I'm amazed by the amount of people here trying to make excuses for what is, forgetting all the other (perfectly legitimate) complaints about the nature of the incident, a massive waste of the fire brigade's time. This is a vital emergency service we're talking about here, and it was diverted because some idiots decided to pull a fire alarm for a laugh/to fuck with people trying to keep a building open. Nice behaviour.

  • getagrip

Wow you guys need to lighten up – it was a joke!

  • Freeeedeerm

With all this student focus on protests and cuts everyones forgotten the big picture. You guys aren't living in the real world, the big problem is the rising cost of cheese how are students suppose to survive under these cheeseless conditions. Wake up all of you!

  • Lucein

Remember the days before the internet, when you didn't have to deal with with an insatiable hoard of assholes day in day out?

  • Sane Students

WOW!! Those Hetherington idiots should learn to laugh, the rest of the University is laughing at them not supporting them! 150 people involved today 23600 students at Glasgow… go figure! great effort by the Strathclyde Police!
