The audience there was also small.

I am sure that even Bill Elliot couldn't tell you this, but the first ever Motor Cross was won by a horseback rider called Stanley Gibbs. Anyway 4pm every Sunday until end of October

Interesting, if slightly inaccurate account of speedway racing!!!
15 races, over 4 laps provides plenty of entertainment and first out of the start doesn't always wins as Shane Parker would tell you, being the master at passing riders.
Anyway 4pm every Sunday until end of October

By: Bill Elliot

While the old adage of any publicity being good for one's chosen sport or interest is one which I will normally, if grudgingly, go along with, I have to say I found this review a little condescending in the tone of the correspondent. Accepting that as in any sport there can be good/entertaining fixtures and some which are less so, I did find that Mr Binning perhaps made too many judgements based on attendandance at one meeting-even the Harlem Globetrotters, the Barcelona FC football team and individuals such as Muhammed Ali had days when their most entertaining features did not rise to the surface, and perhaps your correspondent could at some juncture give consideration to a crash course (pun intended) by your Maths Department in the subtle art of addition-speedway races are in fact run over 4 laps, rather than the 3 suggested! Mention was made of a forthcomng derby against the forces from the dark side, perhaps more usually referred to as the Edinburgh Monarchs-I would respectfully suggest that if your correspondent is willing to undertake a more fulfilling helping of the gentle sport of speedway he could do a lot worse than come to one such gathering of the respective clans-in over 40 years of watching speedway, the next run of the mill meeting with Edinburgh will certainly be a furst.

While the old adage of any publicity being good for one's chosen sport or interest is one which I will normally, if grudgingly, go along with, I have to say I found this review a little condescending in the tone of the correspondent. His name is 'Shane' not 'Sean' Parker. 2. They were Riding in the Premier Trophy competition, it was not a Premier league match. 3. The Tigers Mascot didn't have a hangover... but he would the next day *;o) 4. Sheffield couldn't pull a draw out the hat by heat 15 as they were 47:37 down and could only get a 5:1 max... what they could do is get a bonus match point for losing away from home by less than 7.... happily though it was Glasgow that took the 5:1 to ensure all 3 match points stayed at home. 5. Agree with your final point, Speedway does provide a 'wholesome diversion'... then it becomes addictive, then you end up in Cardiff with 45,000 Speedway fans in the Millenium Stadium for the British Grand Prix. *;o)

Couple of comments…

1.
