GUFC prepare for historic season in the newly founded league.

Glasgow University Men’s Football Club (GUFC) are preparing for a historic season this year after entering the newly founded West of Scotland Football League. The club will play in Tier 7, the second division of the league, which is made up of three conferences. Entry into the seventh tier of Scottish football marks a significant achievement for the club, as they continue to develop and flourish. GUFC will compete in Conference A alongside teams such as Maryhill, Shotts Bon Accord, and Craigmark Burtonians. The inaugural season of the West of Scotland Football League will begin later this year and will see 67 teams from the west of Scotland taking part.

GUFC, who play at the Excelsior Stadium, which is also used by professional side Airdrieonians, have enjoyed success throughout their club in recent years. In the 2018-19 season, the club completed their first-ever “clean sweep” as their first, second, and third teams all won their respective British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) leagues. This year, the GUFC first team sat atop of the Scottish 1A BUCS league prior to the outbreak of Covid-19, seven points clear of second-placed Edinburgh’s first team. As a result of the club being a founding member of the Scottish Football Association, the first team competes in the Scottish Cup, the premier cup competition in Scotland and the side has got as far as the second round as recently as 2010.

There has also been success off the pitch, as earlier this summer the club raised £2290 for the mental health charity Back Onside. During this fundraiser, over the space of a week, members of the club ran and cycled the equivalent distance from Garscube Sports Complex (where the club trains) to the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund, Germany. Initially, the club aimed to run/cycle just one way of this journey, but after fantastic support, the club managed to get there and back within the week.

The 2020-21 season promises to be an exciting one for GUFC as they embark on this new journey and continue to develop as a club.
