All you need to know about GUSSC
Glasgow University Ski and Snowboard Club (GUSSC) is the University of Glasgow’s (UofG) biggest Skiing and Snowboarding society with up to 1,000 members. We contacted GUSSC to find out more about the club. “We host the biggest socials on campus, from ‘Cheese and Wine’ […], to boiler rooms and sub-crawls! We also embark on an infamous annual ski trip for our members, as well as some Scottish ski trips if we are lucky!”
GUSSC are the reigning champions of BUDS (British University Dry Slope Championships) and SUDS (Scottish University Dry Slope Championships) and have been for 8 years in a row.
For memberships, GUSSC has two options: Social (£25) and Competitive (£40). The Social membership is for those with a UofG Sport Membership and provides access to the ski trip, all socials and discounted lessons. The Competitive Membership is for the competitive team with a range of abilities, from beginners to the best dry slope skiers in the UK. The competitive membership provides access to free weekly dry slope training sessions to practice Freestyle and Racing. There is also an option to purchase a ‘Ski Trip and Socials Access’ (£25) for those without a UofG Sport Membership. This provides all the benefits of a social membership
GUSSC also runs heavily discounted lessons for beginners in the first semester (£72 for 4 sessions). Lessons are available for beginner skiers and snowboarders and take place at Glasgow Ski and Snowboard Centre. As someone who took snowboard lessons during my first year through GUSSC, I personally couldn’t recommend them enough! Glasgow Ski and Snowboard Centre is a brilliant environment to learn and the instructors are fantastic! GUSSC also hosts Girls Only Nights at the local dry slope. As Molly (Vice-President) says, “this is to encourage women in snowsports at grassroots level, from beginners to introduction to racing and freestyle. We had over 100 attendees and it sold out in seconds.”
The GUSSC committee is the team behind ensuring Ski and Snowboard continues making waves on the sports club scene. The Glasgow Guardian spoke to four committee members to get an idea of who they are and what they do for GUSSC.
Andrea – President
Andrea’s main role is to be the face of GUSSC and to oversee every member in the club! In addition, as she told us, “I make plans for the year, including goals to achieve and support all committee members in their roles. This means being at all events and keeping the plans for the society on track (meaning Messenger and Outlook are my most used apps!”
Cleo – Technical Design and Media Lead
Cleo’s role as part of GUSSC involves creating the eye-catching graphics for GUSSC social media posts and in particular the merchandise. Cleo says, “the merch is the most fun part and I have big plans this year for the club. I have already designed various posters, a tote bag and a club T-shirt and there are future plans such as a football shirt for the ski trip! Lots of exciting things going on at GUSSC!”
Liam – Social Secretary
As Social Secretary to one of the university’s biggest societies, Liam is responsible for organising all of the socials taking place throughout the year, which are, as Liam puts it, “some of Glasgow’s best nights out!” He also told us about some of the social highlights to look out for this year. “Some of our most famous socials include our Wine and Cheese Night, where we release our ski trip and have hundreds of bottles of wine for our members to enjoy, our Boat Party, where we rent out a party boat for the night, Boiler Room-style sets and more formal black-tie events such as our Snow Ball, I make sure there’s something on offer for everyone!”
Molly – Vice-President
Molly works alongside the rest of the GUSSC committee to ensure their glowing reputation as one of the university’s most popular societies keeps going strong. She took time to highlight some extra events to look out for. An innovation this year is that GUSSC are introducing more of what they call “sober socials”. As Molly says, “weekly Wednesday Coffee Mornings, Run Club and Outdoor Sauna sessions will become part of a series we are calling “Off Piste” for all the fun things we do off the slopes that do not come under our events and socials.”
The main event of the year for Ski and Snowboard is without a doubt the legendary GUSSC Ski Trip 2026. The trip has so many great features, including, as the GUSSC committee say, “skiing, snowboarding, APRES, and unforgettable memories with 600 other students!” Whether you’re a first-time skier, a freestyle pro, or just along for the vibes, this trip is perfect for you. This is the most affordable and fun way to go skiing with all your friends (old or new).
In case you missed Cheese and Wine on 15 October, the location for the trip this year is Tignes in the French Alps! This year’s trip is from 3 to 10 January 2026 and is not one to be missed. As two students who went on the trip in 2023 during their first year said, ‘it was a brilliant experience, the skiing was amazing and the apres were even better’ and ‘the torchlit skiing, cheese and wine and different club nights out were particular highlights!’
As GUSSC gears up for another highly anticipated trip and the rest of the year, it remains a cornerstone of university campus life for those seeking adventure or just looking to explore their passion for the mountains. Continuing to offer students a unique experience of university life and maintaining their status as dominant reigning champions of both BUDS and SUDS, there is no doubt why GUSSC is one of UofG’s most popular societies!
