The Garage Has Been Put Up for Sale

The 32-year old Glasgow venue, host to several famous acts throughout the years, was listed for sale in July 2026.

After 32 years, The Garage, one of Glasgow’s most popular nightclub venues was put up for sale in July 2026. The Sauchiehall Street venue is owned by Donald Macleod, who also owns the Cathouse nightclub on Union Street. Macleod has owned the venue since it first opened in 1994.

Donald Macleod boasted of The Garage’s history and cultural importance, saying: “It has been an absolute privilege and honour to own and operate such a well-loved venue, whose history, energy, location and reputation has placed it on the world’s stage.” Macleod’s reason for selling the nightclub is due to his desire to focus on other business interests: “As I start to focus on developing other areas of my media, promotion and leisure portfolios, this feels like the right time to pass the baton to a new owner, who along with our fantastic management team and staff, will help build on this incredible legacy.”

Nicola Walker, the resident DJ for The Garage, said: “The Garage is an iconic institution, and I’ve been privileged to work with it for the past 29 years. It’s very much business as usual at The Garage, with the club nights and all upcoming gigs going ahead as planned. I hope the fantastic team at The Garage will continue under the new owners when they come on board.”

The sale of the property is being managed by the estate agents, CDLH, who said they “anticipate strong interest from a range of buyers seeking to build on its established legacy.”

In 2024, The Garage, which once advertised itself to operate 365 days a year, including Christmas Day, eventually reduced its opening hours to Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, while  continuing to open on other days for special events. Macleod attributed the change to rising costs, lower footfall in the city and lower attendance, and changes in clubbing habits. It is not the only club to have faced financial pressure in the face of rising costs and changing habits of attendees. Glasgow’s Riverside Festival was cancelled in 2024 due to low ticket sales, while Bonjour Bar on the Saltmarket closed after three years in operation. Symbol, also on Sauchiehall Street, closed after less than a year in operation.

The Garage has been host to many famous acts throughout the years, including Prince in 1995, One Direction in 2010, as well as Biffy Clyro, and Kasabian. Macleod claimed that the venue’s gig diary was fully booked for the rest of the year. The Garage continues to be open to attend for the time being.
