Charity Outer Spaces acquires shares in Radge Media CIC, publisher of The Skinny.
Following the news that The Skinny, the long standing and beloved culture magazine of Glasgow, would cease publication on 10 September 2026, lovers of the magazine expressed concern and heartbreak at the end of the revered print.
The cancellation of The Skinny heightened questions and fears for the future of print media, with the company responsible for publication, Radge Media CIC, citing financial reasons for the magazine’s cancelled future.
Today, however, all is not lost. The Skinny will return to print once again.
Charity Outer Spaces has announced a new partnership with Radge Media CIC. Outer Spaces is a “contemporary visual arts organisation” established in 2021. Through this new partnership Outer Spaces will “stabilise operations by acquiring the shares in the publisher Radge Media CIC”.
This acquisition then allows The Skinny to return and continue its longstanding history of documentation and support of the local Glasgow cultural scene.
“The last month has been incredibly challenging, but the outpouring of support from contributors and collaborators reaffirmed the importance of a space for local, independent, cultural journalism. We’re excited to become part of the Outer Spaces family, and to have this opportunity to continue our work within an organisation whose values align so closely with our own,” says Rosamund West, Editor-in-Chief, Radge Media CIC.
Shân Edwards, Director, Outer Spaces, comments: “Outer Spaces supports a sustainable, resilient arts ecosystem for Scotland by responding to needs in the arts community, and we recognise the vital importance of art criticism and writing that places focus on Scotland’s vibrant art scene. Alongside many peers in the arts community in Scotland and beyond, we were shocked by the news of The Skinny’s closure, we recognise the importance of strong, consistent and critical journalism as part of the arts infrastructure we operate within – which The Skinny has provided for the past 20 years – and were pleased to be in the position to intervene with a solution to allow continued operations in for The Skinny as well as Radge Media CIC’s other titles, GNAW and FEST.”
Hopefully, this proves a healthy foundation to a continued future for The Skinny and other print media. Print journalism is under threat by rising costs and it is up to us to keep engaging, to keep print in focus. The Skinny is just one example of many, but for now the thriving culture scene of Glasgow remains protected and documented.
