Are The Thunder dirty or do we just hate success?
This past NBA season, one of the biggest narratives to develop was that the Oklahoma City Thunder are the villains of the league. Social media blew up with excitement over the team’s elimination from the playoffs in May. There have been few teams to draw such vitriol from fans across the league in recent years. Occasionally, a player receives this kind of aggression online, but it’s rare that a full team gets this treatment. There are three complaints that are most commonly thrown around.
The Thunder are seen as dirty. They play an oldschool style of physical defence. The real issue, though, is that their rough defence often doesn’t get as many foul calls as fans think is warranted. This complaint was the same thrown at the ‘bad boy pistons’ in the 80’s.
Another reason the Thunder are hated is because of their star player. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (SGA) is by far the most hated Basketball player in the world. The hate comes down to one thing: fouls. As stated earlier, the Thunder don’t get called for a lot of fouls despite playing aggressively. But opponents often get called, especially when SGA has the ball. After every Thunder game there are graphics and clips of SGA contorting his body to sell foul calls on opponents, or “flopping”.
But are these criticisms fair?
The Thunder do play rough. But isn’t that what fans have been asking for? One of the common complaints, especially from older fans, is that “teams don’t play defence anymore”. The Thunder were heavily criticised in this year’s Western Conference Finals. The Thunder arguably got away with a lot of excessive contact but the opposition Spurs weren’t innocent either. Carter Bryant ran headfirst into SGA, knocking him over with his shoulder multiple times. This action received little backlash, some commentators seemed even to applaud it.
Part of why they’re so successful is the chemistry they have off the court. This criticism is also a double-edged sword. Players can also be criticised for being too “nonchalant” or not caring enough.
Then there’s SGA. He does get favourable foul calls, but so did Michael Jordan, Shaq, and Kobe. Now, the argument is more the type of fouls that he gets rather than the quantity. But there have been legends arguably more guilty of this. Miami-era LeBron James and Houston-era James Harden were serial-floppers and yet now these players are looked back on fondly. Like the other players I mentioned, there’s a lot more to SGA’s game than drawing fouls. This year he proved that he is one of the most valuable players when the clock is ticking. Shai led the league in late-game scoring, winning ‘Clutch Player of the Year’.
Here’s the main reason the Thunder are hated. They win. In my estimation, the real hate only started during the 2025 Finals. In the Finals, they beat the underdog Indiana Pacers. That is when they became the villains; the goliath that beats David.
Furthermore, the team has amassed the most wins out of any team over the last 3 seasons. Chances are they are going to smoke your team on any given night. I suppose there are few worse feelings than your team losing.
