The October Obsession

October is an exciting month that brings promise of growth and coziness, but why do we obsess over it?

The time has arrived. It’s October in Glasgow and you can’t take a step without stomping on an extra-crunchy leaf while walking down University Avenue. As you take a deep breath, you get hit with that indescribable and yet recognisable autumnal air. The leaves are changing to gorgeous hues of orange and red, and everyone is pulling out their chunky scarves to ward off the morning chills. Everything about October is crisp and cozy, and I can’t help but wonder why is everyone so obsessed with this month? Is there a reason why everybody seems to go crazy once the first of October arrives?

There is an undeniable feeling of excitement I get when I think about October and all it has to bring. I mean, there is so much promise this month brings. We have the beginning of autumn right at the start, gorgeous walks out in the botanics with a latte in hand, wholesome dinners with your friends after a long week of uni, and one of the most anticipated events of the year: Halloween!

October offers us change within the mundanity of life. Every year, I get excited about “reinventing” myself for the season. Maybe I should cut my hair like Rory Gilmore’s? Bangs could be a fun idea! Or I could take up knitting and make myself a scarf with pumpkins on it? It can’t hurt to have another hobby. Would it be crazy for me to try to learn to make apple cider donuts? It probably would, considering I’m not the best baker. October spurs me into action, providing the perfect excuse for a fresh-start. The season changes and we are allowed to change with it.

We can think of this month as a renewal of our goals and the things we want to accomplish. This month motivates us to meet up with friends as much as possible (especially before uni really ramps up), and it also comes with a “checklist” of sorts. During October, you have to go to pick out pumpkins to bring back and carve, you need to find the best pumpkin spice latte around town, and you absolutely have to start your fall movie marathon. Next up for me is You’ve Got Mail!

October represents the nostalgia in life that most of us are chasing because it helps us remember doing all of these autumnal activities with our friends and families. We can reminisce about DIY-ing our halloween costumes with our friends, the first sip of a fall-flavored drink (could be pumpkin spice, it’s a classic after all, but my favorite is cinnamon bun), snuggling in with a good book next to the fireplace, turning on your favorite autumnal movie as the family settles in for a cozy night. October is rooted in this deep-seated nostalgia, and we gladly spend our time during this coveted month replicating those incredible feelings of coziness and togetherness. We get to surround ourselves with the people we love and enjoy excitement in the ordinary. This month is our cozy, little blanket of the year that wraps around us, offering comfort, excitement, and growth.
