An online petition has been launched to stop the plans to demolish the O2 ABC venue on Sauchiehall Street, after a building warrant application was submitted to Glasgow City Council to carry it out.

The petition on Change.org, set up by Lesley Mitchell, has garnered over 8,000 signatures at the time of writing. It states that “the building appears to be structurally sound” and that it should be saved and remain a music venue.

The venue was originally built in 1875, and previously contained a multi-screen cinema, but was later changed into a music venue. In 2009, Academy Music Group bought a majority stake and it was rebranded as the O2 ABC.

Mitchell, who used to visit the cinema at the ABC and also attended concerts there in the last number of years, said to Glasgow Live: “The ABC building is as important to people in Glasgow as the Art School, in some cases more so. More people will have gone to the cinema or a gig there than has attended the Art School, but it does not seem to be attracting the same support as rebuilding the Art School has. This petition will hopefully help to garner that support.”

The petition can be found here.
