SRC elections: students voted on 6 March for a President, VP Student Support, and VP Education to represent them in the 2025/2026 academic year
Duncan Calvert, a 5th year student studying Portuguese and Spanish, won the position of SRC President with 1180 votes. Calvert has extensive experience in student representation and student support, including a previous role as SRC’s Assessor on Court and winner of Team Leader Welcome Week 2024 Best Moustache. His campaign, marked by the slogan #yeswedunCAN, covered various topics: the main points included divestment and being a partner in UofG’s discussions surrounding the rebuilding of the higher education sector in Gaza. Calvert also plans to support student activists on campus by developing a Student Activism Guide – this would provide students with a comprehensive guide on effective campaigning, rights, and information on UK protest laws. He mentions his commitment to holding the University accountable for how it handles cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). His approach would involve a Good Cause reform that includes GBV and reproductive health cases.
To improve the overall student experience, Calvert aims to expand support for Widening Participation students and continue to tackle financial barriers to education. Additionally, he will pressure Glasgow City Council and Holyrood to address the Student Housing Crisis, and he will participate in the Save our Scottish Unis campaign to tackle the under-funding of Scottish universities. Calvert also plans to set up a Priorities Survey: this would be an annual survey through which students can interact with the SRC, and report their feedback. Finally, he will be working with schools and colleges to implement more Student Experience internships.
Ayush Garg was appointed VP Education with 547 votes. Frank Chen, a 4th year Politics & Sociology student, was elected VP Student Support with 731 votes.
Calvert, Garg, and Chen will start office on 1st July 2025.
