This is not the first time the Booker Prize has faced controversy in recent years – from previous winners being criticised to alterations of the submission criteria – there has been no shortage of outrage directed at the literary award. Due to this negative track record, many followers were not surprised when Sarah Jessica Parker’s involvement was announced, with many simply adding the judge to their long list of the award’s mishaps and mistakes. In an article published in the Guardian, columnist Emma Brockes compares Parker’s presence on the panel with the emergence of “celebrity book clubs”, claiming that both rely on the opinion and judgment of a celebrity who has “confidence entirely untainted by expertise.”
Whilst it can be argued that Parker’s position was heavily influenced by her fame and connections, this is not the entire story, and to say otherwise would be a discredit to her long list of qualifications in the literary field. Although she takes on the role of a writer on screen, in real life, Parker has launched her own publishing imprint entitled “SJP Lit” alongside independent publisher Zando, which aims to promote up-and-coming authors and champion underrepresented voices. The star has also frequently discussed her love for reading and has been an avid fan of the Booker Prize for years – shooting her shot on the Prize’s instagram page in 2022 with the plea “Oh let me try!!!”
Sarah Jessica Parker’s role exhibits both the pros and cons of celebrity culture within our society. Whilst the award garnered more attention than in previous years, it also received backlash for its contribution to celebrity culture. However, whilst the influence of celebrities can be negative, it should be recognised that in this instance, Sarah Jessica Parker possessed the qualifications necessary to judge the award. She is a person who has worked in the arts for most of her life and who has experienced the creative industry in a manner that likely allowed her to contribute greatly and provide a different perspective to the deep and highly intellectual conversations the 2025 Booker Prize judges had. No matter how one feels about celebrity culture, it is impossible to deny that Sarah Jessica Parker committed herself to the award, having read all 153 books in the time allotted and delivered on a final verdict alongside the other judges.

It seems like people are judging SJP based on the one thing they know about her life, that she is an Actress. This is deemed as all that she can be. They have made their objections without knowing what other talents, interests or as the article points out business interests she has in the literary world. People can be more than what we see and being well known for one thing does not preclude anyone from being passionate or talented at something else. I wonder if the people raising their grievances, have had reservations about previous judges who weren’t as famous or does not being well known shield you from critique?
