SRC to hold a referendum on UofG arms divestment

SRC calls students to vote and express their views in a referendum on whether the University should stop its investment in the arms and defence industry

The SRC will hold an indicative referendum on UofG arms divestment on 26-27 March 2025 to ensure that students can express their views on the University’s investment policy. The outcome will have no direct impact on University policy; however, it will provide the SRC with the students’ stance on the topic so as to better represent the student population in future conversations with the University.

The University’s investments have been a largely debated topic on campus this academic year, which resulted in several protests from activist groups and the first SRC Extraordinary General Meeting. A consultation exercise held by the University in October/early November 2024 showed that 81% of staff and 86% of students are in favour of the University’s divestment in the arms industry. On 20 November 2024, the University Court voted not to interrupt its investments. The discussion took into account the consultation exercise.

The referendum question is: “Should the University of Glasgow stop investing in companies that earn more than 10% of their revenue from the arms and defence industry?”

A ‘YES’ vote means you believe the University should divest from these companies.

A ‘NO vote means you believe the University should continue investing in these companies.

Students registered at the University of Glasgow are called to join a campaign team, and there will only be two campaign teams, one for ‘Yes’ and one for ‘No’.

SRC VP Student Support, Iris Duane said to the Glasgow Guardian about the referendum: “The SRC is holding this referendum to give all students a clear and accessible way to express their views on the University’s investment in the arms and defence industry. This is an important opportunity for students to engage in discussion and help shape the SRC’s approach on this issue. We encourage everyone to take part – whether by campaigning or voting – to ensure the student voice is heard.
