By Odhran Gallagher

The Guardian newspaper has placed the University of Glasgow 11th in their annual ranking of universities in the United Kingdom for 2023.

The University of Glasgow has ranked 11th place in The Guardian’s best UK universities 2023 rankings. This is the same position the University held on the league table last year. Fellow Scottish institution the University of St Andrews achieved the top spot in the rankings, rising from third place and overtaking the University of Oxford.

After the University of St Andrews, the University of Glasgow was the highest ranked Scottish university on the league table. Also notable on the table are the other Scottish ‘ancient universities’ with Edinburgh, placing 12th, and Aberdeen placing 13th.

Along with St Andrews, the top five positions on the table were made up by Oxford, Cambridge, London School of Economics and Imperial College London.

The rankings were decided based on a number of factors, such as student satisfaction and career prospects. Based on data from the latest National Student Survey, the rating for the overall quality of course, as given by final year students at the University of Glasgow, was 81.5%. This is compared with 72% at the University of Edinburgh and 91.6% at the University of St Andrews.

Another important factor in the league table’s rubric is career prospects, with a respectable 82% of University of Glasgow students in graduate-level jobs or further study within six months of graduation.
